Thank you to everyone who volunteers!
In honor of National Volunteer Week, we would love to hear your favorite volunteer story. Thank you to everyone who volunteers! Our Winning Futures mentors change the lives of hundreds of students a year – they are true heroes!
One of my most memorable experiences was mentoring a student at our alternative high school. One of my mentees was about to get kicked out of school for having another outburst at a teacher. I sat him down to warn him and asked him “Why do you keep yelling at your teachers?” In about 30 seconds his eyes welled up and in a very quiet voice he said “Ms. Marshall I can’t read.” Then, this tough as nails 19 year old sat and cried. I of course also began to cry and together we created a plan to get him help.
It really made me realize that even though these teens look and act like adults, they are still kids on the inside and need us more than ever.
